Are Mom Blogs safe?

Did anyone read the article in the paper yesterday about blogs not being safe? I have heard that from so many people, especially my husband, that this practice of journaling with pictures on line will put my family at risk for identity theft and other crimes. Check out the artlicle and tell me what you think? I have denied the validity of the concerns until now. And I still think, with 1 million or more blogs to read and scrutinize, why would anyone bother with mine???? http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695263641,00.html

For one thing, I'm glad that your blog is public! How else would an old, old friend like me get back in touch? I found you through Lisa's blog. Your family is absolutely darling and you look wonderful. I have made my blog private, illustrating my own fears of putting my kids' pictures on the internet. But I would love to invite you to come check it out! Email me at nimmy@jjrmed.com and I'll send you an invitation!

I'll check back soon!

I thnk as long as you don't put your phone number and address out there, you're good. I kept my blog private at first, then changed it. It's just personal choice. But I will check out the article.

I like getting an insight into things, so in that way I like the openness. On the other hand, I'm pretty guarded with information. But even with that, I worry that I'm sharing too much. I have had enough experience in life, though, to know that if it *can* happen, then it *can* happen to me. All it takes is that one in the million. When you are that one, statistics don't matter. Numbers don't matter. Because you are the one who is suffering the consequences. If you don't play the lottery, your number will never come up. And in the lottery of being taken advantage of, I worry if it's worth the risk to blog.

I recently posted some pictures on my flickr site, and realized two of them were getting a lot more views. These were pictures of our little newborn baby girl who passed away. I realized that for some reason there were two pictures of her getting the most views-- the "naked" ones were most popular. You can see how the world is so corrupt through these little things. It hadn't ever occurred to me that people would be so fascinated with a naked picture of a newborn! But again, even if they're not the majority, there are sick people out there.

I think in the end, the saying "O be wise" is just a good way to go about it.

I keep going back and forth on this too. Part of me says, what would anyone want from my blog and from us...we have nothing and they would have to be very determined to come...we can't even get our family to come.:) But then the other part of me says why take the chance.... I don't know what to do. One thing I have done is installed a stat counter that tells me where we are getting visitors and how long people are on the blog. That has made me feel better and I haven't noticed anything odd yet. www.statcounter.com I am going to stir over this for a day or two. Thanks for posting the article btw.

Alright, I am glad that I made mine private, but think that I will be more guarded now. Besides, those invited to the blog already know us and know our names and where we are! Right?

I read the same article and I decided everyone's crazy. I even blogged about it, too! Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't even really understand why it's scary to have your name and phone number public. Mine's public--not through my blog, but through Tyler's photography company. And the white pages.

Anyway, I love, love, love your blog. If you want to see ours, it's howethought.blogspot.com

Love,

Laura

I read that too . . . but in the end felt that who really wants to read mine anyway?

I think it is fine! I agree there are sooooo many blogs who could keep track. Someone would have to know you personally.

That's all folks!

See ya!
